Ash Nov 2016

Ashley Jones – Enrichment Presenter, Speaker & Communications Trainer

Ash Jones was born in South Wales and spent his early professional career in the British military (RAF), serving overseas and in the United Kingdom for 10-years during the Cold War era. This was followed by a second career in the UK public sector, where he served in a variety of roles in several significant public safety organisations.

Financial exploitation of the vulnerable elderly and social loneliness, became something of a personal crusade and he established the Senior Citizen Liaison Team (SCLT) Charity in December 2009.

The all-volunteer charity swiftly grew to become instrumental in reducing deception & fraud crimes against older adults throughout the UK. The SCLT Charity has become synonymous with innovative solutions to address the problems associated with senior financial exploitation and has received recognition at several levels for its activities – most notably the Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the ‘Team MBE’) in 2015 and ultimately the United Nations Public Service Award in 2017 (Quote: “The World’s most prestigious award in international recognition of excellence in global public service”).

Ash remains very actively involved with several organisations that share his passion for protecting and safeguarding the older adult community, both as a trustee, providing strategic oversight and direction, as well as volunteering at the front-line.

An accomplished event presenter, keynote speaker and enrichment lecturer, Ash has previously held associate membership of the Professional Speaking Association (PSA) and is a current member of the English-Speaking Union.

He has addressed audiences of great diversity, including local community groups, such as, PROBUS, Women’s Institute (WI) and Rotary, right across the spectrum of scale, to events with hundreds of international delegates; including the 2012 & 2018 International Police Problem Solving Conference (Rhode Island, USA), the 2016 German Crime Prevention Congress (Magdeburg), the 2015 & 2017 European Public Sector Awards Conference (Maastricht, NL) and the 2017 United Nations Public Service Forum (The Hague, NL).

His previous audiences have included the Prime Minister at Downing Street and over 2000 members of the Ahmadiyyan Muslim Community at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in London.

As a subject-matter expert, he has made many television appearances to address the theme of elder-fraud and doorstep-crime, these include appearing with Gloria Hunniford on ‘Doorstep Crime 999’ and as an occasional specialist on ‘elder financial abuse’ for ITV West News and several local radio stations. He is regularly invited to give keynote speeches at conferences and seminars, particularly in relation to the

ageing population, social-loneliness and protective services for vulnerable community groups, where he has shared the speaker’s podium with such luminaries as Dame Esther Rantzen.

Ash is married with a young family; and is very active within the voluntary sector, holding several public appointments and trusteeships with third sector organisations. He has been recognised for his voluntary service with several prestigious awards, including the British Citizen Award for community service (BCAc) in July 2015, the Order of the League of Mercy in 2017 and the MBE in the 2020 New Year Honours List. In his extremely rare spare time, Ash enjoys land-management, skiing, general outdoor pursuits and the odd park run and 10K running event.

During his many years experience as a leader in the public and voluntary sector, Ash found himself regularly providing keynote speeches at international confernences and public events. This led to a realisation that many people suffer extreme anxiety in situations involving any form of public speaking, presenting or communicating to even small numbers of co-workers or clients. Often resulting in negative opinions being formed of speaker's abilities and resulting in potentially thwarted career aspirations.

Ash maintains that just about anyone can become an effective and accomplished public speaker and presenter, with the benefit of some coaching and support from an experienced mentor, who is able to offer practical advice and guidence in the not-so-mystical art of public communication skills.

He works with leaders from the business, public-service and voluntary sectors and others to help develop their knowledge and dexterity in the mastery of the all- dreaded skills of public speaking.

So whether you seek to speak at a conference, engage with new clients, or simply improve your ability and performance at communication situations within your own organisation (job/promotion interviews, presentations, pitches to clients, etc), get in touch to discuss how Ash can assist with your communication needs.

In his voluntary role as Loneliness Ambassador for the Senior Citizen Liaison Team Charity, Ash spearheaded the innovative Chat Bench initiative as the principal United Kingdom response to the 2019 support of United Nations World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The concept of the Chat Bench is simple - combat the rising issue of social loneliness by providing a simple and effective mechanism to socially connect local citizens in the midst of their own communities and improve the social mobility of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of society.

The subsequent marketing and delivery of the initiative was a remarkable success, resulting in global media coverage, which led to the initiative being replicated in hundreds of locations across the UK and far beyond.

This resulted in Ash undertaking live radio interviews in Australia and other countries, as well as providing written interviews and material for such prestigious publications as The Times, The Telegraph, The Daily Mirror and The Washington Post in the USA and CNN World.

Hundreds, if not thousands of Chat Benches have now been established across the globe, which now play a significant part in reducing the epidemic of loneliness in the elder community.
